Oksoo Elementary
Oksoo Elementary is a remodeled school library for a public elementary school in Seoul. The project is part of a program that converts older facilities into creative learning spaces. The library is arranged like a playground, so the boundaries between playing and reading remain open. Children read at desks, on cushions, or lying on heated floors with their shoes removed. Bookshelves are set at various heights to suit the eye levels of children. The ceiling is painted sky-blue, and lighting was selected for each area, with some existing LED fixtures reused.
Oksoo Elementary School Library by Yoojin Jang has been featured as an innovative representation of architectural design by the A' Design Award & Competition. Oksoo Elementary School Library won the Bronze A' Design Award in Interior Space and Exhibition Design in 2023. The A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award is a juried, academic and highly prestigious design competition which celebrates exceptional design of residential interiors, restaurants, hotels, offices, galleries, retail stores, showrooms, exhibition spaces and more.
